The Meaning of Goju Ryu
Everything in life must maintain a balance—night and day, fire and water, strength and gentleness. The founder of our style, Grandmaster Chojun Miyagi, named it Goju Ryu, where Go means “hard” or “resilient,” and Ju means “soft” or “yielding.” His student, Gogen Yamaguchi, carried forward his teachings.
Thus, Goju Ryu translates to “the hard-soft school,” reflecting both the technical aspects of our martial art and its deeper philosophy.
